A Guide to Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

If you’re thinking about writing your own vows, you know it’s a big undertaking. As you sit down on the couch with your glass of champagne and you attempt to sum up all of your relationship and love you have for this human being you’re about to marry, you realize it’s overwhelming. You’re summing up your love, dreams, and promises to your partner in a few short minutes.

It’s also intimate. When you write your vows, you are baring your heart and soul to the love of your life AND you’re doing so in the front of your family and friends. If you’re up for the challenge, it’s such a beautiful way to celebrate your love. We are also here to help!

Wedding Vow Template

This outline is meant to keep you inspired. Of course, you don’t have to keep to a structured template, buuuut it sure is helpful!

1. Make Sure you say “I love you.”

This seems like an obvious one, but sometimes you have so many other things to say, it doesn’t happen. Don’t leave those three little words out of your vows.

2. Tell your partner you’ll be there through thick and thin.

That’s really what marriage is all about. It’s about loving someone for your entire life no matter what happens. Most wedding vows touch on sticking around through sickness and health, through good times and bad times, and for richer or poorer. Chances are, your marriage will suffer through peaks and valleys and it’s nice to tell your future Mr. that you will always be there.

3. Share personal stories.

Your friends and family are truly invested in your relationship and want to hear vows that are real. If you’ve had bumps in the road, you should speak to that. Plus, it’s much more interesting to hear about your odd quirks and personal moments. Don’t be afraid to talk about those low moments and the quirks. Your unique love story should be expressed!

4. Actually make promises.

Vows aren’t just cute little stories that you share in front of your family and friends. They are promises, serious commitments. That doesn’t mean they have to be heavy, of course. You could promise to stick with each other through thick and thin and to kill the spiders. And clearing the cobwebs.

5. Shout out to the support you’ll need from others.

All of your dearest family and friends have traveled and committed to be at your wedding. True story though, you’ll need them to support you throughout your marriage.
